Fabric Requirements

You will need five different fabrics for the block:

  1. White/Green Print – Background fabric

  • Dark Green Swirl Print – Adds depth and contrast

  • Medium Lime Mottle – Middle accent

  • Light Green Floral – Soft secondary accent

  • Dark Green Texture – Rich, grounding color

  • Cutting Instructions

    Cut in the order listed:

    From White/Green Print (Background):

    • 4 rectangles: 3½” x 6½”

    • 1 square: 3½” x 3½”

    • 4 squares: 2″ x 2″

From Dark Green Swirl Print, Medium Lime Mottle, Light Green Floral, and Dark Green Texture (cut from each):

    • 1 strip: 2″ x 5″

    • 1 rectangle: 2″ x 3½”

    • 3 squares: 2″ x 2″

    Piecing the Block

Step 1 – Making Pieced Squares (Diagram I)

    • Sew together:

      • 1 white/green print 2″ square

      • 1 dark green swirl print 2″ square

      • 1 medium lime mottle 2″ x 3½” rectangle

    • Align as shown in Diagram I to create one pieced square.

    • Make 4 total, varying the fabric arrangements for interest.

Step 2 – Creating Pieced Rectangles (Diagram II)

    • Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of one lime 2″ square.

    • Place it on a white/green print 3½” x 6½” rectangle (right sides together), aligning raw edges.

    • Stitch on the drawn line. Trim ¼” away from the seam and press open.

    • Repeat on the opposite end of the rectangle with light green floral 2″ square to complete the pieced rectangle.

    • Make 4 total.

Step 3 – Assembling the Block Center with Partial Seams (Diagram III-A & III-B)

    • Layout one 3½” white/green square in the center.

    • Add 2″ x 5″ strips around the center square following Diagram III-A.

    • Begin sewing the first strip with a partial seam – start about 2″ from the top edge and stop before reaching the corner.

    • Open the strip, rotate, and add the next strip in sequence.

    • Continue adding the remaining strips, then finish the partial seam to complete the center square.

Step 4 – Final Block Assembly (Diagram IV)

    • Arrange:

      • Pieced squares from Step 1

      • Pieced rectangles from Step 2

      • Block center from Step 3

    • Assemble into 3 rows as shown in Diagram IV.

    • Sew rows together, ensuring seams interlock neatly.

    Pressing

    • Press seams toward the darker fabric for a crisp look.

    • Press the final block flat before trimming if necessary.

    Tips for Success

    • Use a ¼” seam allowance throughout for accuracy.

    • Chain piece units to speed up production.

    • When making multiple blocks, lay them out before sewing to ensure the twist effect lines up.
