Diamond Log Cabin Quilt Block Pattern

The Diamond Log Cabin Block is a striking variation of the traditional log cabin design. Unlike the classic square layout, this version creates a radiant diamond shape that instantly becomes the focal point of any quilt. It’s an excellent choice for quilters who love geometric balance, symmetry, and bold visual impact.

This block is also a great choice for quilters who enjoy structured piecing but still want freedom for creative expression. By changing the fabric placement, experimenting with prints versus solids, or even introducing bold accent colors, you can make each Diamond Log Cabin Block look completely unique. It’s a timeless design that balances tradition with modern possibilities, making it a favorite for both beginners and advanced quilters.

This block is also a wonderful way to play with color values. Starting with a light center and gradually working outward with darker fabrics, you can achieve a glowing, three-dimensional effect. Whether you use solids, prints, or even scraps, the Diamond Log Cabin Block is sure to elevate your quilting projects.

    Sewing Instructions

This block is sewn in the traditional log cabin method: start with the center square and add strips around it in a clockwise (or diamond) sequence, following the numbering from the diagram.

    Step 1: Center Square

    • Place Piece 1 (2 ½” square) at the center. This is the heart of your diamond.

Step 2: First Round (Pieces 2–5)

    • Sew Piece 2 (Fabric B, 3 ½” strip) to one side of the center. Press seam outward.

    • Add Piece 3 on the right side. Press.

    • Continue with Piece 4 and Piece 5, completing the first diamond frame.

Step 3: Second Round (Pieces 6–9)

    • Repeat the process, sewing longer strips (5”) in sequence around the first frame.

    • Always press seams outward after each addition.

Step 4: Continue Building (Pieces 10–21)

    • Keep adding strips in order, each round slightly longer (7”, 9”, 11”).

    • Follow the numbered sequence carefully to maintain the diamond shape.

Step 5: Outer Round (Pieces 22–25)

    • Add the longest strips (13”) around the block to complete the diamond shape.

    Step 6: Border (Piece 31 – optional)

    • Add a final strip around the entire block (2” x 14”) to square off the diamond and bring the block to 12 ½” square.

    Finishing

    • Square up your block to 12 ½” x 12 ½”.

    • Press well with steam for crisp edges.

    • Your block is now ready to be joined into a quilt top.
