French Roses Quilt Pattern

Quilting has always been about combining beauty with creativity, and the French Roses Quilt is the perfect example of that. With its soft, layered petals and gentle curves, this design creates a quilt that looks as if delicate roses are blooming right on your fabric. It’s a wonderful project for both beginners and advanced quilters, since the applique shapes are forgiving and the overall process is enjoyable.

This quilt allows for a lot of personal expression: you can use brand-new fabrics, dive into your scrap bin, or mix both to achieve a charming, vintage-inspired look. The best part is that the raw edges of the petals fray slightly after washing, giving the flowers a romantic, shabby-chic feel. Whether you make it as a lap quilt, a wall hanging, or a gift for someone special, this quilt is sure to bring joy.

Quilt Size

  • Finished quilt measures approximately 57″ x 57″ after quilting, binding, and washing.

Fabric Requirements & Supplies

  • Background Squares & Outer Border: 2 ⅔ yards of white or very light coordinating fabric.

  • Flowers, Inner Border & Binding: ¾ yard each of five coordinating assorted fabrics.

  • Leaves: 1 fat eighth of a coordinating solid or tone-on-tone fabric.

  • Backing: 2 yards of 90″ wide quilt backing fabric (or 4 yards of coordinating standard fabric).

  • Batting: Twin size – 72″ x 90″ (an 80% cotton/20% polyester low-loft batting works well).

  • Additional Supplies:

    • Rotary cutter, cutting mat, scissors

    • Acrylic ruler (24″ x 6″ or 6 ½” wide, plus a 9 ½” square ruler)

    • Template plastic (12″ x 18″), fine-tip permanent marker, and fabric marker

    • Thread of choice for piecing and quilting (monofilament or colored threads work nicely).

  • Cutting the Templates

    1. Using the provided template (four petals and two leaves per block), trace the shapes onto template plastic.

    2. Cut out the templates carefully.

    3. Trace around them onto your chosen fabrics and cut each piece.

      • Each block uses 4 layered petals (#1–#4) plus optional leaves.

    Making the Blocks

    1. Prepare the Base Block: Cut your background squares at 6″ x 6″.

    2. Layering the Petals:

      • Place the largest petal (#1) in the center of the square and stitch around the edges about ⅛” from the edge.

      • Repeat with petals #2, #3, and #4, stacking them from largest to smallest.

      • Add one or two leaves if desired, stitching them slightly under the bottom petal layer.

    3. Raw-Edge Appliqué: Use a straight stitch or zigzag close to the edge. Don’t worry about perfection—the fraying will enhance the rose effect.

    Assembling the Quilt

    1. Arrange the blocks in a pleasing layout. You’ll need 63 blocks total to complete the quilt.

    2. Sew the blocks together into rows, then join the rows.

    3. Add the borders using your coordinating fabrics.

    4. Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing. Quilt as desired—simple quilting lets the roses stand out.

    5. Bind the quilt using the double-fold binding strip.

    Tips & Ideas

    • For a soft, romantic quilt, choose pastel tones such as pink, lavender, and cream.

    • For a bold and modern version, try bright, saturated fabrics against a dark background.

    • Mixing scraps gives the roses a scrappy, vintage charm.

    • After washing, the edges of the petals will fray beautifully, making the roses look even more natural.
