Batting: 1 yard
Wedge ruler (9° or 10° wedge)
Rotary cutter, cutting mat, and scissors
Pins or sewing clips
Matching or contrasting thread
Sewing machine
Cutting Instructions
-
Cut strips from your chosen fabrics, each about 6–7 inches wide.
-
Sew the strips together to create a wide strip set. Alternate colors to achieve contrast.
-
Using your wedge ruler, cut wedge-shaped pieces from the strip set.
-
Arrange the wedges in a circular sequence to preview the spiral effect.
Assembly
-
Pair and sew the wedges: Begin by sewing wedges in pairs, then combine pairs into groups until the full spiral shape emerges.
-
Press seams: Press seams to one side or open for a flatter finish.
-
Trim edges: Once the spiral top is assembled, trim edges if needed to even out the runner.
Quilting the Runner
There are several options to quilt your project:
-
Stitch in the seams: Follow the natural wedge lines for a clean look.
-
Curved echo quilting: Add curves that echo the spiral shape.
-
Free-motion waves: Create organic, flowing lines across each color section.
Choose a quilting style that enhances the fabric choices and overall look.
Finishing Options
You can finish the runner in two ways:
-
With Binding: Layer the quilt sandwich (top, batting, backing), quilt as desired, and finish the edges with bias binding.
-
No Binding (Turned method): Sew top, batting, and backing right sides together, leaving a small opening. Turn right-side out, press the edges flat, and topstitch to close the opening. This gives a clean, modern edge.
Tips & Variations
-
Use seasonal fabrics (Christmas, Autumn, Halloween, or Spring colors) to make runners for different occasions.
-
Alternate light and dark fabrics for a bolder spiral effect.
-
Adjust the size by cutting more wedges or using wider strips.
