Block Busters – Glistened Quilt Block

The Block Busters – Glistened quilt block is a striking, modern star design that combines precision piecing with dynamic movement. Created by Sarah Furrer for Studio 180 Design, this block is part of the 2025 BlockBusters series (#108) and is a wonderful choice for quilters who enjoy crisp points, layered stars, and professional-looking results.

What makes Glistened truly special is the way it blends Blooming Lemoyne Star quadrants with Flying Geese units, creating a block that feels both structured and energetic. The layered geometry gives the illusion of motion and sparkle—perfectly living up to its name.

Part of the well-known BlockBusters series, the Glistened quilt block is designed to challenge and inspire quilters who enjoy exploring advanced shapes with reliable, repeatable techniques. This block stands out beautifully in sampler quilts, skill-builder projects, or as a feature block repeated across an entire quilt. Its crisp lines and layered star effect make it especially appealing for quilters who love precision, thoughtful color placement, and blocks that truly sparkle once assembled.

Design Features and Construction

The Glistened block is built from three main units, clearly outlined in the pattern (page 1):

  • Unit A: Blooming Lemoyne Star Quadrants

  • Unit B: Flying Geese units

  • Unit C: Center square

  • These elements come together to form a bold star that radiates outward from the center. One important design detail noted in the instructions is that the Blooming Lemoyne quadrants do not align with the Flying Geese seams—this is intentional and part of what gives the block its unique visual impact .

    Tools and Techniques Used

This block is designed to be made using Studio 180 Design tools and techniques, including:

    • Rapid Fire® Lemoyne Star tool

    • Wing Clipper® I for Flying Geese

    • Tucker Trimmer® I for accurate trimming

    • Blooming Lemoynes Technique Sheet

The pattern walks you through trimming and assembling the Lemoyne Star quadrants step by step, ensuring clean points and accurate sizing. The included charts make it easy to follow along regardless of the block size you choose.

    Block Sizes and Flexibility

One of the strengths of the Glistened block is its versatility. According to the cutting and color audition charts (page 2), the block can be made in multiple finished sizes:

    • 6” finished block

    • 9” finished block

    • 12” finished block

This flexibility makes it perfect for sampler quilts, medallion quilts, or even as a stand-alone statement block.

    Color Play and Visual Impact

The Glistened block truly shines when you experiment with color placement. The pattern encourages you to:

    • Use the same color for star points A and B for a cohesive look

    • Or use different colors to emphasize movement and contrast

Because of the layered star effect, high-contrast color palettes work especially well, but softer, tonal fabrics can create a beautifully elegant version too.

    Skill Level

This block is best suited for intermediate quilters or confident beginners who are comfortable using specialty rulers. With accurate cutting, trimming, and pressing, the results are extremely polished and rewarding.
