Half Double Crochet (HDC):

Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC):
Insert your hook from back to front around the post of the next DC and complete the DC.

🧵 Pattern Instructions

Foundation:
Start with a chain that is a multiple of 3. For a baby blanket, chain 120.

Row 1:
In the second chain from the hook, make a HDC and a DC in the same stitch.
Skip two chains, then in the next chain, work a SC, HDC, and DC all in the same stitch.
Repeat from * to the end of the row. When one chain remains, work one SC and turn.

Row 2:
Chain 1 (this counts as your first SC). In the top of the SC from the previous row, work a HDC and a DC.
Skip the next HDC and DC, and work SC, HDC, DC into the next SC.
Repeat across the row. When two stitches remain, skip one and finish with a SC in the last stitch. Turn.

Repeat Row 2 for the entire length of your blanket.

💡 Tips for Success

  • Practice first! Start with a small swatch—chain 15 or 18—and work a few rows to get used to the sedge stitch pattern. It becomes very intuitive with practice.

  • Yarn choice: Soft worsted weight (category 4) yarns in pastel tones work beautifully for baby projects.

  • Add a border: Once your blanket is complete, consider adding a border using FPDC and BPDC stitches to frame the edges and give the blanket a polished look.
