How the Dutchman’s Puzzle Block is Constructed

The Dutchman’s Puzzle is built entirely with Flying Geese units, arranged in a way that forms a pinwheel-like pattern. Typically made up of eight flying geese, the block has a square layout that creates visual movement, perfect for adding energy to quilts, wall hangings, table runners, and more.

Standard Dutchman’s Puzzle Block Features:

  • Made with Flying Geese units

  • Common sizes: 12” x 12”, but easily resizable

  • High contrast fabrics for maximum visual impact

  • Works beautifully in both scrappy and coordinated color schemes

  • Materials You’ll Need
Two contrasting fabrics (one for the geese, one for the background)
    Rotary cutter and mat
    Quilting ruler
    Sewing machine
    Thread
    Iron and pressing board

Basic Instructions for a 12” Finished Block

    1. Cutting:

      • For the “geese” triangles: (8) 3.5” x 6.5” rectangles from your feature fabric

      • For the background triangles: (16) 3.5” squares from your background fabric

    2. Construct the Flying Geese Units:

      • Place a background square on the right corner of a geese rectangle, right sides together.

      • Sew diagonally from corner to corner, trim the excess, and press open.

      • Repeat for the left corner to complete one flying geese unit.

      • Make 8 flying geese in total.

    3. Assemble the Block:

      • Arrange your 8 flying geese in pairs, forming four sets that radiate around the center.

      • Sew the pairs together into rows, then sew the rows together.

      • Press seams for a flat, crisp block.

Tip: Use precise measuring and pressing to keep your points sharp!

    Design Ideas and Variations

    • Scrappy Version: Use different prints for each set of flying geese for a playful, eclectic look.

    • Monochrome Look: Stick with one bold color for the geese to make them pop against a neutral background.

    • Reverse It: Switch the roles—make the geese the background color and use prints for the triangles to create a unique negative space effect.
