Yarn:
-
Worsted Weight (Medium #4) Cotton Yarn
-
Approx. 80-120 yards (73-110 meters)

Why cotton? It’s durable, absorbent, heat-resistant, and holds its shape—perfect for table mats!

Gauge Check (Important!)
To avoid curling or rippling, keep your gauge consistent.
✅ After Round 4, your square should measure about 4 inches (10 cm) across.

Understanding the Construction
You’ll crochet this coaster in joined rounds, starting from the center and working outward. Each round grows the square by adding stitches along the sides and at the corners.
The key to a flat, square shape?
✅ Consistently working (hdc, ch 2, hdc) into every corner space for each round.
Step-by-Step Crochet Instructions
Part 1: Starting the Square Base
Option A: Magic Ring (Recommended for a Tighter Center)
Make a Magic Ring (MR).
Round 1: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch). Work (2 hdc, ch 2) four times into the MR.
Pull the tail to close the ring.
Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc.
(You’ll have 8 hdc and 4 ch-2 corner spaces.)
Place a stitch marker in each ch-2 corner space.
Option B: Chain 4 Method (Alternative)
Ch 4, sl st into the first ch to form a ring.
Follow the same instructions as Round 1 above.
Part 2: Building the Square Body (Hdc Rounds)
You’ll continue working in joined rounds. The pattern is simple: hdc in each stitch along the sides, and in each corner space, (hdc, ch 2, hdc).
Round 2:
Sl st into the first ch-2 corner space.
Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch).
(hdc, ch 2, hdc) in the same ch-2 space (first corner).
Hdc in each of the next 2 hdc along the side.
Repeat for each corner and side.
Join with sl st.
(Total: 16 hdc and 4 ch-2 corner spaces.)
Move stitch markers up to the new corners.
Round 3:
Sl st into the first ch-2 corner space.
Ch 2.
(hdc, ch 2, hdc) in the same corner space.
Hdc in each of the next 4 hdc.
Repeat for each corner and side.
Join with sl st.
(Total: 24 hdc and 4 ch-2 corner spaces.)
Round 4:
Sl st into first ch-2 space.
Ch 2.
(hdc, ch 2, hdc) in the same space.
Hdc in each of the next 6 hdc.
Repeat for all sides and corners.
Join with sl st.
(Total: 32 hdc and 4 ch-2 corner spaces.)
Your square should now measure about 4 inches (10 cm) across.
Round 5:
Work corners as (hdc, ch 2, hdc).
Hdc in each of the next 8 hdc on each side.
Join with sl st.
(Total: 40 hdc and 4 ch-2 spaces.)
Round 6:
Continue with same corner increases.
HDC in next 10 HDC per side.
Join with sl st.
(Total: 48 hdc and 4 ch-2 spaces.)
Round 7:
Same corner formula.
HDC in next 12 HDC per side.
Join with sl st.
(Total: 56 hdc and 4 ch-2 spaces.)
At this point, your square should measure approximately 7–8 inches (18–20 cm) from side to side.
Part 3: Final Edging (Single Crochet Round for Neatness)
This finishing round will give your coaster a crisp, clean edge.
Round 8:
Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch).
Sc in each hdc along the side.
In each corner space: (sc, ch 1, sc).
Continue sc across each side and repeat corner stitches as you go.
Join with a sl st to the first sc.
FO, leaving a 6-inch tail.
Part 4: Finishing and Blocking (Essential for Flatness!)
Weaving in Ends:
Using your yarn needle, neatly weave in all loose ends on the back of your coaster for a professional finish.
Blocking (Don’t Skip This Step!):
Blocking ensures your coaster stays flat and holds its square shape.
How to Block:
-
Lightly wet your coaster—either by misting it or giving it a quick dip (gently squeeze out excess water—don’t wring!).
-
Lay flat on a towel or blocking mat.
-
Gently stretch and pin the coaster into a perfect square, aligning sides and sharpening corners.
-
Allow it to dry completely before use.
