Ohio Star Block Pattern

The Ohio Star Block is one of the most beloved and recognizable traditional quilt blocks in American quilting history. With its rich heritage and striking geometric design, this block has been cherished for generations by both beginner and advanced quilters alike. Its versatility and elegance make it a perfect addition to any quilting project be it a bed quilt, wall hanging, or table runner.

In the example featured above, taken from the Heavens to Betsy project published in Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine (June 2005, Issue #373), the Ohio Star Block is given a unique paper foundation twist designed by Carol Doak. This design comes from her book 50 Fabulous Paper-Pieced Stars, where intricate precision and clean lines bring a modern touch to a timeless favorite.

Why Choose the Ohio Star?

The Ohio Star block is not only visually impactful but also incredibly adaptable to color play and fabric variation. Traditionally made with nine squares (a 3×3 grid), the central star is created with quarter square triangles that give it its signature radiating points.

In the version shown in the image, the block is built using paper foundation piecing, which allows for high accuracy and cleaner seams, especially in complex designs.

Foundation Paper Piecing: A Precise Method

Foundation paper piecing is a favorite among quilters who enjoy sharp points and detailed designs. The pattern shown in the image provides a numbered sequence, guiding you through the order of fabric placement and stitching. This technique helps to eliminate distortion, particularly when working with small pieces or angles that are difficult to piece traditionally.

The example includes sections numbered 1 through 9, guiding quilters through each strip to form a bold diagonal effect. The intricate layering and intersecting lines give the Ohio Star a dynamic, almost woven appearance—perfect for a border, a centerpiece, or even an entire quilt top.

Tips for Success

  • Use high-quality paper for your foundation templates to prevent tearing or distortion.

  • Shorten your stitch length when sewing on the paper to make removal easier.

  • Pre-cut your fabric pieces slightly larger than needed to ensure full coverage over each section.

  • Press each seam before moving on to the next numbered section.

Once you complete your block, trim it to the specified seam allowance (¼”) before assembling it into your larger quilt design.
